Youth and Adults Mark the Beginning of their Preparation to Enter the Catholic Church, Rite of Acceptance

Next weekend (June 2, 2024), several children and adults will continue their journey toward joining the Catholic Church with the celebration of the Rite of Acceptance at the 10:30 Mass.

What is the Rite of Acceptance? This rite, celebrated during Mass, is a beautiful moment in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA, formerly known as RCIA) when individuals publicly express their intention to continue their faith journey toward reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The Church, in turn, accepts these individuals as "catechumens," persons who intend to become members.

Although it’s named “Order of Christian Initiation for Adults,” it can also be adapted for use with children. When children are not yet baptized, have attained the use of reason and are of catechetical age (usually age 7 and older), the Church adapts the process of Adult Initiation for use with children. In our parish, children participate in Family Faith Formation with a parent for about two years before the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. During these years, families are introduced to who Jesus is and why we follow him as disciples while receiving support to develop a life of prayer within the context of family life. The process is a whole-family journey of conversion: learning, living the faith and growing closer to Jesus and his Church.

We welcome these children and adults to the Order of Catechumens next week and as a community pray for them in this stage of their journey to the Easter Vigil and reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

By Susan Bippley, Coordinator of Family Ministry
